Instructions
3. It is 1775 in the American colonies. You are the moderator (person in charge) of a debate.

Create a debate between a loyalist and a patriot about this question:
Should the 13 American Colonies declare independence from England?
You may choose from the patriots and loyalists you have read about in chapter 11.
You must structure your debate like this:

Moderator: Hello. Today we will debate over the topic of the colonies declaring independence from England. Hello fellow colonists, patriots, and loyalists. Our first loyalist to be speaking today is Thomas Hutchinson. Welcome.
Loyalist argument #1: Thank you. I believe it is disrespectful and disloyal to England for patriots to not be grateful for all that England has done for them.
Moderator: Understandable. Now, Benjamin Franklin. What do you have to say?
Patriot argument #1: In some ways, I could agree. But the colonists owe nothing to a ruler that has only given them unfair laws and untrustworthy lies. The laws the British are unfair and unnecessary.
Moderator: Thank you for both opinions. Let's hear from other collegues of England and the colonists.

Loyalist argument #2: Hello. My name is John Murray, or better known as Lord Dunmore. I believe that since Great Britain started the colonies and continued to protect them, they have a fair right to tax in exchange for their safety.
Moderator: Now we will hear from Mercy Otis Warren, a patriot.
Patriot argument #2: I believe that the taxes are unacceptable. Most colonists have a hard time earning enough money to support themselves, even without the unruly taxing laws. Therefore, the colonists are doing the right thing. They would be better off without the government overall.
Moderator: Mercy Otis Warren is known for her powerful opinion in her writing, indeed.
Loyalist argument #3: I disagree. I am Jonathon Boucher, a leader of many leaders. When you diobey the British, you disobey God. The king's rule comes from God.
Moderator: Okay then. Lastly, we will hear from Samuel Adams.
Patriot argument #3: Thank you. I believe that colonists shouldn't have to pay taxes on British goods. I also believe that the colonists should elect their own governors, instead of the government picking them.
Moderator: Thank you all for your opinions today. We shall see what happens.
