Today we went to the Rouge River. Basically, there's three stations.
Physical- examine the physical things of the river, such as surroundings, animals, water depth/speed/look, Etc.
Chemical- test the river water for signs of bad chemicals that could be killing wildlife.
Benthic*- wear waders and get in the river to collect samples of wildlife, then examine them.
*benthic is everyone's favorite. You get into waders and go into the river, and let's be honest, for a tired, hot 5th/6th grader, we'd rather get in the river than test for chemicals.
The best order of stations is physical, chemical, benthic. Best for last, I guess. Worst is benthic, physical, chemical. You're stuck cleaning up the chemicals, and if you fell in the river or got mud on you, it stays till we leave after the hot physical station.
