Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

Q: Reactions #7: Which of the characters change and why?68

A: In my story Chains, I think the main character Isabel changes the most. She becomes more strong and resilient. When she was forced to do many things, she became stronger. When Madam Lockton made her a slave and hurt him in many ways, she built up a strong resistance against the bad of the world. I think these changes are believable because as a slave, she either becomes stronger or breaks under the pressure. Most slaves don't go out of line because the consequences of that behavior could be life or death. Isabel is the kind of slave to behave, but still have fire inside of her. Thus the insolence sign 'I' on her cheek. She has been through a lot, like losing her sister, Ruth, physical attacks, and hard work. This is why I think it is believable for Isabel to change a lot.

Q: Theme and Mood #2: If you had to find one object that would symbolize the main theme of the novel, what would it be?

A: If I had to choose one object that would symbolize the main theme of the novel, I would choose chains. Chains symbolize the main theme of the story because the main character, Isabel, and her little sister Ruth are basically chained to their masters. As slaves, they are owned and under rule by whoever their master is. Their master has the right to sell them, make them work, and completely control the outcome of their lives. It's as if they are chained to their masters, with a yearning for freedom, but never able to see that light. Unless, they get a master that decides to loosen the chains. To not work them to a breaking point, but to understand their human rights. But more likely is a master who has no sympathy for them and will not hesitate to hurt them. Isabel and Ruth unfortunately have a master who will seperate and work them hard. They are forced by the chain of the law, so I think that chains can symbolize the novel and what they are going through.
