Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

Q: Reactions #7: Which of the characters change and why?68

A: In my story Chains, I think the main character Isabel changes the most. She becomes more strong and resilient. When she was forced to do many things, she became stronger. When Madam Lockton made her a slave and hurt him in many ways, she built up a strong resistance against the bad of the world. I think these changes are believable because as a slave, she either becomes stronger or breaks under the pressure. Most slaves don't go out of line because the consequences of that behavior could be life or death. Isabel is the kind of slave to behave, but still have fire inside of her. Thus the insolence sign 'I' on her cheek. She has been through a lot, like losing her sister, Ruth, physical attacks, and hard work. This is why I think it is believable for Isabel to change a lot.
